Mental health problems are real, can be very serious and they affect families from all walks of life. Without effective intervention, mental health problems in young people can get worse, increasing the likelihood of school failure, family breakdown, substance abuse, criminal activity, and suicide, the leading cause of non-accidental death among 10-19 year olds. More than 70% of adults with mental illness report that signs and symptoms occurred during childhood and adolescence. Mental illness and the issues associated with mental health problems represent a crisis affecting every community in this country, touching almost every family.
