There are many important issues facing Canadians today that demand our attention. Why should you care about the mental well-being of children and youth?
Because:
- There can be no health without mental health;
- So many young people and their families are suffering needlessly; and
- Children and youth are the future of this country - we need to ensure they are equipped to take on the challenges that lay ahead.
Mental health touches everyone. One in five Canadian children and youth - or 1.2 million - has a mental health problem that impairs their ability to function and leads to worry and stress for their family. In Ontario, it is estimated that two-thirds of children and youth with mental health problems are not receiving the help they need. They face barriers such as long wait lists for service or they may be reluctant to seek help due to the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health issues.
Unrecognized and untreated mental health problems in young people often become more severe, increasing the likelihood of school failure, family breakdown, violence and other criminal activity, and suicide, the leading cause of non-accidental death among adolescents. Without effective intervention, childhood mental health problems may evolve into more serious mental illness during adulthood.
The Kinark Foundation was launched to invite community members from across Ontario to take on the challenge of helping children and youth with mental health problems and their families. Projects funded by the Foundation incorporate the best in leading-edge research, innovation, and evidence-based practices, offering direct services to children, youth and families and strengthening communities.
We know that children, youth and families who receive appropriate and effective mental health services early on can overcome their difficulties and lead happy, productive lives. That's why we are asking you to join us as Champions for Children's Mental Health™. By learning more and supporting the work of the Kinark Foundation, you can be a Champion for Children's Mental Health, giving children and youth in Ontario the ability to see a brighter future.
